08/11 - 2018 American Legion Baseball Great Lakes Regional unofficial update - August 11, 2018

08/11 - 2018 American Legion Baseball Great Lakes Regional unofficial update - August 11, 2018
Below are some (unofficial) notes on the Great Lakes Regional and the other regionals. Most - if not all - regional games should have "on-line" coverage, while the World Series will be carried by ESPNU / ESPN3 live. Other regional W-L standings are AFTER media links for the Great Lakes teams.

The 64 teams that started the eight regionals are now whittled down to 32. Between Saturday and Sunday (weather permitting) eight regional champions will emerge to congregate ("shall we gather at the ballpark...") at Shelby, NC to the American Legion World Series. No host teams, no automatic bids.

Of passing interest - While many of the players getting mentioned here are 2017 and 2018 HS grads, most of the these teams have eight or more players (out of a maximum of 18) that will be returning to HS this fall (this month for some?). A good American Legion program is not one good group, but a steady "turn-over" as older players leave and younger players come in to earn their playing time.

Radio / Internet coverage (all games) - WZOQ (Ottawa, OH) - https://www.zsportslive.com/
(It also looked like Terre Haute and Napoleon had radio or internet broadcasts of their own games)

Concessions at Mercy Field are (in my opinion) quite good;
Coffee stop - Strachn Bakery (759 S Holland Sylvania Rd, Toledo, OH 43615) - closed Sunday

High school affiliations are by me (Jim) and therefore subject to error!

Saturday 08/11 -
+G12 / noon - Danville Post 21 (1 loss) vs Sheboygan Post 83 (1 loss) - elimination
+G13 / 6pm - Napoleon Post 300 (no losses) vs Eau Claire Post 53 (1 loss)

Friday 08/10 -

+G9 - Sheboygan Post 83-1, Napoleon Post 300-0 - eliminated - Jim's unofficial scoring
*Sheboygan/83 (1-3-1); SP/WP-Salvador Parra (Sheboygan North/17; 7ip/cg, 0R, 4H, 1BB, 1K);
*Napoleon/300 (0-4-1); SP/LP-Christian Peterson (Patrick Henry/19; 7ip/cg, 1R/0er?, 3H, 2BB, 1-HBP); 2B (Jason Beverly (Delta/18));
*Jim's unofficial notes: Sheboygan loaded the bases in the 1st inning (single by Dylan Lindow, Brent Widder HBP, Salvador Parra walk) and scored when a 2-out infield error (could be scored as a fielder's choice, I suspect). Sheboygan's Sal Parra made it hold up stranding runners at second (3rd, 6th innings) and third (2nd, 4th innings). Christian Peterson pitched well for Napoleon.
*
+G10 - Eau Claire Post 53-7, Terre Haute Post 346-6 - eliminated - Jim's unofficial scoring
*Terre Haute/346 (6-9-2); SP/nd-Kendal Riley (Terre haute North/18; 3 batters, 1R/1er, 1H, 2BB); 2nd-Parker Bray (Terre Haute North/18; 4-1/3ip, 4R/4er, 5H, 5BB, 7K); 3rd-Blade Pittman (Terre Haute North/18; 1/3ip, 0R, 1H); 4th/LP-Brigham Booe (Northview/18; 1-2/3ip, 2R/1er, 3H, 2K, 1-HBP); 2H (Evan Newman (West Vigo/19); Cameron Cook-3 (Terre Haute South/18); Benjamin Downs (Terre Haute South/18)); 2RBI (Cook);
*Eau Claire/53 (7-10-0); SP/nd-Jack Brown (Eau Claire Memorial/18; 3-2/3ip, 4R/4er, 6H, 4BB, 2K, 2-HBP); 2nd-Ethan Kjellberg (Elk Mound/18; 1-1/3ip, 1R/1er, 2H, 1BB); 3rd/WP-Draeson Marcoux (Eau Claire Memorial/18; 2ip. 0R, 2H, 1K); 2H (Zachary Stange-3 (Eau Claire North/17); Tanner Halvorson-3 (Eau Claire North/17); Jaxon Kostka (Eau Claire Regis/18)); 2RBI (Kostka); 2B (Kostka);
*Jim's unofficial notes: A back-and-forth game with both teams seeming (to me) to scramble for pitching. Eau Claire broke a 6-6 tie in the bottom of the 7th with an infield hit, a bloop single, an infield error and a "walk-off" hit-by-pitch on an 0-2 count. By my count Eau Claire left fourteen (14) men on base, Terre Haute twelve (12) - so there was some clutch pitching and defense, too.
*

+G11 - Midland Berryhill Post 165-10, Danville Post 210-3 - IScore (I was tired and went home!)
*Midland Berryhill/165 (10-11-1); SP/WP-Derek Beougher (Bullock Creek/20; 6ip, 2R/1er, 2H, 5BB, 3K); 2nd-Evan Schlatter (Bay City Western/19; 1ip, 1R/1er, 0H, 2BB); 2H (Nick Dardas-3 (Bay City Western/19); Martin Money (Midland HS/18); Brandon Smith (Saginaw Heritage/18); Zach Nelson (Midland Dow/18)); 2RBI (Nelson); 2B (Money; Garrett Willis (Midlanad HS/18));
*Danville/210 (3-2-2); SP/LP-Wyatt Boyer (Salt Fork/18; 2-2/3ip, 3R/3er, 4H, 2BB); 2nd-Noah Jordan (Bismarck-Henning/18; 2-1/3ip, 4R/1er, 3H, 1BB, 3K); 3rd-Colten Arford (Bismarck/18; 1-1/3ip, 3R/2er, 3H, 2BB, 2K); 4th-Ernest Plummer (Danville/18; 2/3ip, 0R, 1H, 1BB); 2H (Andy Bunton (Danville/18));
*Jim's unofficial notes: I listened to the last few innings (at home) on Ottawa. Ohio's WZOG broadcast. WZOQ has carried all the games of the 2018 American Legion Great Lakes Regional.
