d) the last four spots in the batting order went 7/16, 3R, 3RBI;

(2) Midland Berryhill Post 165 - too many walks allowed; not enough clutch hitting; failure to "secure" the baseball tagging baserunners -

a) Midland's 4-run rally in the 4th was fueled by two hits, four walks and one hit batter - bases loaded (tie game ath that point) with one out and could not score;

b) Midland had base hits in the 8th, 9th and 10th but could not score;

c) Give Delaware credit - for the first six innings Jack Dubecq was perfect!

Observations -

(1) I understand how "pool play" helps make tournaments easy to organize, but old-style "double-elimination" seems (to me) to be far more exciting since every game is critical to a team's success or elimination. You can't "tank" a game when you are way behind or "walk-thru" the last pool game when you know you are "in" (or "out"!).

(2) I think pitch-counts are politically necessary - just like tackling rules in football - but while I applaud the overall intent (safety) they can really distort a game. Like "pool play" the overall strategy can be significantly altered. If I could make one tweak to the "105" pitch rule most commonly used, I'd allow the starting pitcher "120" pitches.

(7) Seven inning vs nine innings - A team in a five-game tournament of nine-inning games has upto 45 innings to pitch. Assuming 15 pitches an inning (on average) that is about 675 pitches. With a pitch-count limit of 105 a teams a LOT of pitching. Reducing games to seven innings drops the "average" down to 525 - a more manageable number for an "average" team. That said, a LOT of baseball can be played in the 8th and 9th inning!

Thursday 08/16 - Midland Berryhill Post 165 had a four-run sixth inning to pull away from Randolph County (NC) Post 45 for a 7-2 win in their first game at the 2018 American Legion Baseball World Series. Garrett Willis (Midland HS/2018 - Central Michigan) went 6-1/3 innings (leaving due to pitch count limits) giving up two runs (earned), five hits, three walks, six strikeouts and two hit-by-pitch and Seth Gower (Bay City Western/2018 - Lansing CC) finished the game. Bryce Marsh of Randolph County Post 45 went 5-1/3 innings and took the loss (5 runs / 3 earned, 6 hits, 1 walk, 3K, 4-HBP).
